can't read DVD disk (Toshiba sd-c2402)

I have compaq 1700t labtop with toshiba sd-c2402 dvd-rom
My DVD-rom has no problem with any cd (both data and
music), but won't recognize DVD. Error message says "...
can't read from disk. The disk might be corrupted. ...
format is not compatible with windows....." I watched
DVD before I upgraded to Windows XP. I installed all
necessary decoders. And, I searched Microsoft Knowledge
base article 321641 (problem with reading DVD), and tried
several things. I also searched internet to find the
solution. But I couldn't. Rather I found that many
people have similar problem of this, but no one answers.
Did anyone solve this problem?

You say that you "watched" the DVD before the upgrade to XP. Is this a
movie-type DVD? If so, XP has no native support for such a DVD. You need
to buy a third-party software DVD player, one compatible with XP, and
install that. Pre-XP software players will not work.

I have the same problem with reading DVD+RW disks on my
Compaq M700 Laptop with the Toshiba dvd drive.
Microsoft knowledge base article 818733 addresses this
issue. you need to get a special modified Udsf.sys file
from microsoft to fix this problem. Its not released for
general use so you must go thru Microsoft tech support to
get it.
