Thank you for the response.
I have run the Network Setup Wizard and created a new connection (I use a
broadband and connect to several clients through a "hub"/ethernet switch);
but the problems still not solved. FYI the internet connection works just
fine. Any other suggestions?

Go to Start/Run, and type DEVMGMT.MSC , highlight the NIC device, Action menu, "Uninstall", then restart Windows, to find the device
drivers again automatically.

I have unistalled the NIC as you suggested. Restart Windows, found new
hardwares (2 NICs: 1 NIC direct to internet/broadband thru modem, the other
one for LAN thru hub), check Internet connection okay, but the same problems
still unsolved.
Is it possible the problems related to the registry?. Several days ago I had
problem with missing tab on Display Properties and posted here, and the
problem was solved by modifying the registry values. Thanks.

I have no problem connecting to the internet; the problem as I have mentioned
earlier are (1) I can't open/view the STATUS of connection, (2) Icon in
notification area when connected is not shown when checked. Anyway I have
downloaded and run the WinsockFix, but the problems are still unsolved.

A command prompt will let you do:
NETSTAT /ANO
and
IPCONFIG /ALL

If you see some dns failure:
restart windows, after you go to start/run, and type CMD, then at that prompt type:
IPCONFIG /flushDNS
and then :
IPCONFIG /registerDNS

My guess would be you have some incompatibility in the driver for the LAN NIC.

I followed your suggestions but nothing happened. As I mentioned earlier I
have no problem connecting to the internet, including LAN NIC. I suspect the
problem is in the registry. Could you inform me the location and the correct
data/value of the related registry? Or do you have other suggestions? Thanks.

Status, and icons a a part of the system files. Refreshing those files may re-enable the display. My chief suspect would be
comctrl32.dll, since it's the Status 'dialog'.

To repair all system files, go to Start/Run, and type: SFC /SCANNOW

A Repair XP setup might also help.

There are scripting, and logging functions available to access the failure, (but just a blanket repair might be easier.) Everythihg
in Windows is an "Event", status included. Looking at EVENTVWR.EXE might tell you something.

You probably have some incompatibility in the NIC driver, if a repair fails.

I could not find gpedit.msc file anywhere in my computer. Where is this file
located?
(I have searched all C drive).

I have done: Start/Run SFC /SCANNOW and no error noted.
I want to try the Repair XP setup without losing my data files and programs,
but I do not know how.
Thanks

I bought my PC with the WinXP-HE installed (OEM) and I have no WinXP CD. I
only have a Recovery Partition from the PC's manufacturer. But if I use the
recovery option then it will change the PC to it's state when it was shipped
meaning all programs I have installed and data will be lost. Also I have
upgraded the WinXP-HE to SP2. Can you help? Thanks

I want to raise this problem again (7/14/2005) because it is still unsolved.
I hope those experts at MS can really help me. Thanks
