Cant open attachments in Windows Mail/Vista

I have read most of the discussion groups and thank you for that information.
Here is my situation. vista/windows mail/office 2007 all installed. Error
message to set associations in control panel. Have done this many times and
seems that the correct icon is listed though when I go through the "change
file association" , the check box for "associate all the time" is greyed out
so I cannot check it.
If I save the attachments to the desktop, they open just fine but I want to
be able to open them in Windows Mail. I saw the fix for .doc attachments.
Is there one for exe also? Would I have to fix each extension/file type that
I wish to open while in Window Mail.
Thank you!

I have already installed Office 2007 so I dont need a viewer. I just need to
be able to open up word, excel documents while I am still in Windows Mail.
It is unacceptable that XP had no trouble with this but Vista does.

Note that my response was directed at Sue.

I understand you have already done the fix for Word documents,
although you didn't say if that was successful.

I could not find a specific fix for Excel files.
If Windows Mail does not meet with your expectations, I suggest
upgrading to the newer Windows Live Mail:

No problem with buying 2003, spent half a day yesterday tying to get it
online from MS website, getting forced into 2007. Still having problems
with windows mail opening docs, error reports coming up etc. I need to be
able to view, save, print and edit email attachments and I need them to open
quicker, what do you suggest?
Is there an update for this available?

Same problem as...?
Please describe your exact problem.
Can you save the attachment and then open the saved file outside
of the email program?
Which types of attachments do you have a problem with, .DOC, .PPS?
