Can't open attachments after Microsoft Security Bulletin MS03-026

P

Petrina Aiello

I recently downloaded the files suggested my Security
Bulletin MS03-026. Now when I use Microsoft Outlook
Express to read my e-mail the attachments to every e-mail
received are "zapped". The e-mail will display the
following message --"OE removed accessed to the following
unsafe attachment in your mail". The only way I can open
attachments is to read the e-mail via my "Web Mail"
account. How do I fix this problem. Someone, please help
and please provide simple step-by-step instructions.

Thanks

1: are you sure the attachments are virus free?
2: are the attachments something that would be considered
high risk (eg .exe files)?

Greetings --

Let me get this straight: You've installed a security patch
(probably more than one, judging from your description), and now your
complaining because your PC is more secure? Your email attachments
haven't been "zapped;" that's not even close to the meaning of the
words "removed access."

Outlook Express' default security settings are simply trying to
protect you. OE has no way of telling whether an attachment actually
contains a virus or not, so it temporarily blocks any of those file
types that could potentially contain a virus. In Outlook Express,
Tools > Options > Security, uncheck the "Do not allow attachments to
be saved or opened that could potentially be a virus" option, assuming
you trust the source, of course. The wiser course of action, however,
would be to modify your list of unsafe files, as outlined in the KB
articles below:
