Can't Log on to Windows XP

Greetings.
I have a relatively new problem (X1week).
I cannotlogon to my Windows XP.
The computer will "boot up."
It will go the "log on" screen, and have my username.
My password never works. (I have not used the password
in about a year, but I know the password. I recently
cleared all of my stored passwords after watching a
Dateline special about people stealing passwords.)
If I press enter/ok without entering a password, the
computer will act as if it's logging on.
It will go to my normal desktop screen, but no icons will
appear.
The "Start" menu (usually at the bottom of the screen)
will not appear, so there is NOTHING on the screen but
the usual background for the desktop (which used to have
icons on it.)
I have restarted the computer several times. NOTHING.
I have started and pressed F8, and utilized SAFE mode,
Start Windows Normally, Start Windows with the last
known configuration that works, etc.
I still get the same results.
The only way that I am able to type this message is that
each the computer goes to the blank desktop screen, I
receive an "error" message stating that a logoninit error
has occurred, which allows me to "click" to see the error
information via the web. That takes me to this Microsoft
site.
I NEED HELP.
CAN ANYBODY HELP ME ON THIS?
THANKS. BE BLESSED.

Clearing your stored passwords is evidently the cause of your problem. There
may be a short cut via the keyboard to bring up the Task Manager
(CTRL-ALT-DELETE), or Windows Explorer, but other than that, I'll leave you
to the experts.
