Can't install program due to NTVDM error....

Guest

While attempting to install Nero 6 I keep receiving the same error message:

16-bit MS-DOS Subsystem:
The NTVDM CPU has encountered an illegal instruction.
(a line like this is usually included)... CS: 9fe3 IP: 0217 OP: fe ba cb fe 7c

What the heck does that mean and why can't I install my software? I've
searched around the internet for a solution to this problem and found that
Microsoft only addresses this issue with Windows NT. I have found, however,
that many people out there with Windows XP (Media Edition or not) are
encountering the same installation error message while attempting to install
a whole variety of software programs.

For reference, my system is a Dell Dimension 8400, 3.2 GHz P4, 1GB DDR2 RAM,
250 GB hard drive, and XP media edition SP2. Any help would be greatly
appreciated!

Hi,

Close all running programs. Locate ntvdm.exe in the \Windows\System32 folder
and delete it (it's probably corrupt). Reboot the system. See if the problem
goes away, as the file will be replaced by one from the system cache (System
File Protection at work).

I did as instructed, but the problem still occurs. Same error message. What
next?

Hi,

Click start/run, type cmd and click ok. From the prompt run this:

copy /y C:\Windows\repair\autoexec.nt C:\Windows\system32

Then close the command prompt and retry.
