Can't install .NET Framework 3.0

Hi, I need to install .NET Framework 3.0 for a program tha I would
like to run. However, I am unable to install it. I can successfully
download the file from Microsoft, but it fails to install. There is
no error message or code other than to say "Installation failed."

I have tried all the fixes on the microsoft .NET framework 3.0
website, at least those I can understand. I am running Windows XPSP2
on HP Pavilion dv8280 with 2GB RAM. Plenty of hard disk space. All
other windows updates have been successfully installed.
Interestingly, .NET Framework 1.1 was successfully installed, but I
cannot install .NET Framework 2.0.

I run Spysweeper for spyware, Zonealarm firewall, and AVG antivirus.

Any suggestions?

Shut down virus scanning, spyware and turn off zonealarm firewall. Install
then, turn on previous items.
