I tried to upgrade my installation using the install CD.
While it was deleting files it stopped, saying:
"file copy cancelled. setup can't continue"

Hope you can help,
Peter

You can install Fax Services through Start, Control Panel, Add / Remove
Programmes, Window Components. Is that how you started the procedure?

Is your CD a Windows XP SP2 CD, an earlier version or something else?

I tried both methods.

It was the original CD, I assumed the SP2 cd wouldn't be appropriate.

Sorry, that's not too clear.

I used the method you suggested and I ran a similar one
(that behaved the same way) directly from the original
install CD.

Thanks,
Peter.

What Error Report appears in Event Viewer?

Check the System log of Event Viewer for Error Reports.

Please post copies of all Error and Warning Reports appearing in the
System log in Event Viewer for the last boot. No Information Reports or
Duplicates please. Indicate which also appear in a previous boot.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer.

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event
Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from
Event Viewer.

Since SP2 is installed, you now may need to "slipstream" SP2 into the
original XP CD, thus creating a "legal" new XP install CD that has SP
2 "rolled" into it.

Will I really be able to copy the XP install disc?

Yes. It's not copy protected in any way. Download the SP2 file and
Autostreamer, and you'll be done in no time.

I tried it again and this time it couldn't find fxsapi.dll
It seemed to be looking in c:\windows\ServicePackFiles\i386,
but Explorer says it's there okay.
I loaded the SP2 disc but it couldn't find the file, which isn't
there in its normal format.

I looked at the error log and found quite a few of these:
The device, \Device\Harddisk0\D, has a bad block.

I guess I have to get a new drive.

Should i just do a straight copy over?

Select Start, Run, type "chkdsk d: /f /r" without the quotes and click
on OK.

Next try HD Tune(freeware) as you can see the SMART
information relating to the drive etc.

Download and run it and see what it turns up.
http://www.hdtune.com/

Select the Info tabs and place the cursor on the drive under Drive
letter and then double click the two page icon ( copy to Clipboard )
and copy into a further message.

Select the Health tab and then double click the two page icon ( copy to
Clipboard ) and copy into a further message. Make sure you do a full
surface scan with HD Tune.
