can't get past boot

Hello,
My friend has a problem with his windows xp whereby after
boot when he moves his mouse all or most of his desktop icons
illuminate and clicking with the mouse clicks them all and
nothing usefull happens. He is basically stuck at this stage.

He does not want to format the drive and start again as he wishes
to fix the problem.

Can someone please advise on a course of action?

Hi, according to that website item six says:

"6. Follow the instructions on the screen to complete Setup."

Will that destroy existing user data on the disk or will it
only overwrite xp systemfiles/dlls etc?

Your data should be fine, as the process only involves system files.
