can't get one computer to network

i have a dell desktop and dell laptop both running xp. can set up network on
newer laptop (wireless) and can see the desktop with it but can not get
desktop to see the laptop. have tried everything on this board and others to
no avail. i get the message that access is denied, can't loacte path to
server etc. the router is a 2wire router. i have tried setting up the
desktop with both wired and wireless adapters but get same results. things
i've tried include disabling the firewall, virus protection, etc. could the
problem be with the laptop not allowing the desktop to see it?
