can't get emails

My Windows Mail account hasn't worked for months. I have Vista and Cox is my
server. I can send emails, but can't get them. There are no error messages,
it looks like it is checking for new emails, I just don't get any. I can get
emails through Cox Web Mail, but would like windows mail to work. I have
tried to switch to Live Mail, which didn't work either. I have McAfee, but
deleted it for awhile to see if that was the problem, but still couldn't get
emails even when I didn't have McAfee. Any ideas?

After you uninstalled McAfee antivirus, did you follow up by using their
debris removal tool:
http://service.mcafee.com/FAQDocument.aspx?id=107083&lc=1033

If you don't use that tool, McAfee leaves behind so much crud that it
still interferes with Windows Mail.

Also, since that mail account may have become corrupted, delete it,
restart Windows Mail, then recreate it.

As always, make sure email scanning in any antivirus is disabled,
for the reason explained here:

Gary's post seems to be gone from my post. I used the McAfee removal tool he
suggested along with creating new accounts as SIW2 suggested. I think my
email may be working again! Can't believe it. I'll never use any McAfee
product again. Is there an antivirus program that doesn't take up so much
hard drive and cause problems? Thank you very much to Gary and SIW2. I had
given up on Windows Mail.

Of the free antivirus programs, the ones that are compatible
with Windows Mail are:

AVG free edition:
http://free.grisoft.com/doc/5390/us/frt/0?prd=aff
or
Avast free edition:
http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html

However, with either of those, during the install phase you must select
'custom' install, and then deselect the email scanning module so it won't install.

Instead of switching to a different antivirus, another option is to upgrade
to Windows Live Mail (WLM), which is more resistant to the adverse effects
of aggressive antivirus products: http://get.live.com/wlmail/overview

Even with WLM, you must disable email scanning in the antivirus.
