can't find folders and files

My husband installed windows XP over windows 98 without backing up anything
from our pc and now I can't find some of my folders that were within other
folders. Only certain ones are missing and I can't find them anywhere. I've
tried looking in my documents and using a search, nothing comes up, is there
any hope of finding them?
