can't download .exe deja vu!

Hi

I'm new to Vista although I've had to revert to XP for now unless a solution
has been posted. I read the posts under "joemast2007" a few days ago about
inability to download exe files. I clean installed OEM Vista home premium and
added no other software except Kaspersky and usb network adaptor. No changes
were made to the default installation. Initially I asked it to update windows
but many failed.

More of a concern is that other files I attempted to download eg messenger
and adobe reader would either fail on security grounds (windows security) or
download and then fail to execute, the problem listed in details as
"APPCRASH" with a link to microsoft privacy policy. I tried IE protection off
and UAC both ways, still to no avail. If I make hard copies of the downloads
then many will run without the problem mentioned but that's hardly ideal. I
haven't yet used a download manager although I'm convinced the problem lies
within vista. It's a standalone PC. I've even tried downloads from microsoft
after a reinstall before adding antivirus but still failed.

Any ideas given the fact that overall it seems to be an exciting OS even if
only on a cosmetic level at the moment?

Will:
The Kaspersky may be the cause, disable it then try updates again. Not
knowing if your installation is x86 or x64, if you have a x64 installation
the USB network adapter could be the cause. Have a great day.

HI Dennis

thanks but have tried that - have installed Vista cleanly at least 3 times
now - with/without Kaspersky and with two different adaptors, one PCI, one
USB and both worked fine. I'm now using USB adaptor Belkin F53805D N and I'm
sure it's not that causing the problem. My Vista is 32bit if that helps.

My system spec is:
AMD 64x2 4200+
M2N4 SLI motherboard
ASUS EN8800GT graphics
Maxtor 6250F0 250GB HDD

Will,

I have the same problem and I have one conclusion so far. It is the Belkin
N adapter. Why?

Well, if I download the files from my XP machine (using it's built in
wireless NOT the belkin) and then transfer them to the Vista x64 (or x32 -
I've tried both) they work. If I download them from the Vista machine (using
Belkin N usb adapter - because that is all I have for that machine) they
don't. I get the same errors .i.e. "<application name> has stopped working"
with an "APPCRASH" error if it is an exe file. I also tried downloading the
7zip msi and all I got with that was a blank dialog/dialogue box and nothing
else happened. In the MSI situation I logged the install and it complained
heavily about "PrepareDlg" calls being out of the bounds of some dimension...

It is likely to do with the drivers that are claimed to work. I sent them
an email and they are usually quite good at responding so let's see. I'll
let you know.

Did you get any further as I see the post was last month?

I'm rapidly coming to the same conclusion about the Belkin Wireless N USB
adapter. Everything I try to download with my new build PC and clean Vista
32bit install doesn't work (iTunes, various drivers, Messenger etc etc). The
Windows installer will always stop the install and come up with an error
message.

However, if I download the same files to a memory card on my older Vista 32
bit PC (with a Linksys PCI wireless card) and install them to the new PC,
they work perfectly.

I've also noticed that certain websites (BBC, Facebook) display corruption
or odd looking pages sometimes. Again, these are fine on the old PC.

I'll follow this thread with interest as the problem is driving me crazy !!

Hi Inc Grey!,

A quick note: I found Firefox gave me greater success and I have only had
one file corrupted in about 100. Maybe it is a combination of IE7 and the
Belkin? I still don't have any other clues to the actual cause yet though!
I will keep whoever reads this informed of the outcome and would appreciate
any reciprocation.

Thanks!

Hi Naeem,

In frustration I bought a D-Link wireless N USB adapter yesterday just to
try and isolate the problem. The new adapter works perfectly and all the
problems I had with the Belkin adapter have disappeared !

I'm using IE7 and all downloads work and install correctly now.
