Can't delete files

A while back, I needed to restore some lost files and had to restore the
entire image backup of my C: drive to an external drive. I'm through with
that large file and want to delete it from the external drive. However, I
keep getting error messages for some of the files that say "Cannot delete
xxxxxx: The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable."

For example, one case is in M:\Drive(C)\downloads\Intel Drivers\xxxxx.

I'm running XP Pro with all current upgrades.

Addendum...

I forgot to mention... I right clicked, selected properties and unchecked
the read-only box as well as allowing all sub-folders and files to be
changed from read-only. Still, some won't delete with the same error
message.

I ran chkdsk and it's doing the same things.

Thanks for the idea and any other thoughts will be welcome.

I just did run chkdsk. Thanks for the idea but I'm still having problems.

I found one of the offending files (there are a bunch). I'm getting error
messages as "Cannot delete symicnet.dll: The file or directory is corrupted
and unreadable".

I really don't understand what the problem could be. I'm using
Administrator privileges.

I'd appreciate other ideas. Thank you.

BACK UP ALL YOUR PERSONAL FILES AND DATA AT ONCE!

You're hard drive may be quickly failing.

Thanks John. I performed an image backup last night to an external drive.
I'm not having trouble with that external drive nor my C: drive. The
problem I'm having is with a supplimental hard drive (labeled M:), not my C:
drive. If it dies then there is no real data loss. It can all be restored
from the external drive. It's just handy to have if I need a short-term,
in-the-clear (as opposed to an image) backup.

Thanks again for the suggestion. I'm still quite interested in any other
ideas!

Run a manufacturer's diagnostic utility on it, go to the drive
manufacturer's web site for the utility. The drive might be dying, in
which case there isn't much sense fighting with it. If it passes the
diagnostic tests then you can do a chkdsk /r on it or just do a complete
format on it.
