Can't delete email from Outlook Express In box

I can't delete email from my Outlook Express In box unless I delete
all messages in the deleted items folder. I usually delete a half-
dozen or so emails from the In box then go to the deleted items folder
to delete them, then must return to the In box, etc. What can I do?
