Can't change pagefile size in XP Home

Barry Buckels

I have tried several times to change the pagefile size
from "Custom" with settings of 96 MB (min) to 192 MB (max)
to a range of 350 to 450 to allow for the suggested amount
of 382. I click the "set" button then when I click "OK"
the system reboots and when it restarts the same pagefile
size is there. I also clicked on the option "System
managed size" and clicked on "Set" then "OK". Again a
reboot and restart and the same settings.
I have 256 MB of RAM and am still getting virtual memory
being reset by Windows and I'm being asked to wait.
I am about to reformat entirely to remove a virus that got
into a system restore file and would like to try a fix for
this now even if it may cause some harm. I will be fixing
it anyway and would like the practice and\or the lesson of
what not to do.

Sorry about the length but I would like to know for when I
reload XP soon.

Thanks Barry Buckels

Have you tried setting it to No Pagefile first, reboot and
then set your custom size? Also, you will want to set your
upper and lower limits as the same amount. This will cause
your pagefile to be static, and avoid any fragmentation.
If you are using your pagefile on the same volume as your
OS, after you re-install, you should set it to no
pagefile. After the reboot, defrag your drive and then set
your pagefile using Custom. With 256mb of ram, I would
probably set it to 400mb. Again, use the 400 setting for
both initial size and maximum size.

Open Control Panel - Add/Remove Programs and look for an entry for
the Intel Application Accelerator. If it is listed then select it and
click on Add/Remove to uninstall it. Reboot the computer and your
problem should be resolved.

And if the Intel Application Accelerator was installed then you should
go to www.intel.com and download the latest version of the Intel
Application Accelerator and install it.

If that does not resolve the problem then see MVP Alex Nichol's
article on Virtual Memory in Windows XP at
http://aumha.org/win5/a/xpvm.htm especially the section dealing with
problems.

Good luck

.
The message I got from Ron Martell had to try removing
and reinstalling a new Intel driver (accelerator). I do
not have it at present and am using an AMD Duron
processor. Should I try downloading the Intel Application
Accelerator since I have this processor? It may be a
little out of my league; but after reinstalling later, it
wouldn't show even if it was not good. Right?

The other advise was great and very informative but did
not correct this yet. I have more links to follow though.

Thanks again and please let me know.

Truly yours,
