Can't change desktop background

In the Display Properties window, on the Desktop tab, the Background list has
been disabled - the list has a solid grey background, nothing is highlighted
and the sliders won't work. It is the same on my daughter's profile, but my
son's works fine. I think SpySheriff 'protected' my wallpaper, but when I
emailed them I got no reply. I have since uninstalled Spy Sheriff, but the
changes are still in place!
My daughter got round the problem by right clicking on a picture, but even
this didn't work for me.

You probably have not completely cleaned off SpySheriff since it is evil
malware. Go through this two-part removal process and you should have
control over your desktop again:

Part 1. Run noahdfear's SmitFraud and SpyAxe removal tool -
http://noahdfear.geekstogo.com/click counter/click.php?id=8
References - http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic36868.html

Part 2. Run David Lipman's tool -
http://www.ik-cs.com/programs/virtools/SmitFraud.exe

David's Instructions:
Execute SmitFraud.exe (Note: You must accept the default of C:\McAfee)
Choose Unzip
Choose Close

NOTE: You may have to disable your software firewall or allow WGET.EXE
to go through your firewall to enable WGET.EXE to download the needed
McAfee-related files.

Execute c:\mcafee\clean.bat (or Double-click on 'Clean Link' in c
\mcafee)

A final report in HTML format called C:\mcafee\ScanReport.HTML will be
generated. At the end of the scan, it will be displayed in your browser
(Opera, FireFox or Internet Explorer). It is suggested that you move
the report out of c:\mcafee before performing another scan.

(no, three My Lord!)
Part 3. Do general malware removal and maintenance:

This has been very helpful to me too "Perrin." My problem differed slightly
but I thought I'd give this a whirl. I didn't have to go to that site you
listed, I just changed the checked web setting on desktop and voila! It was
listed as "Security" but did not have any properties. I did not know of us
having set anyhting in there and had been suspicious before. It had said
"Security" so I didn't think much of it. Those "bad guys" are sneaky! I did a
couple checks and added a known microsoft desktop web to desktop to see what
it should look like. Properties showed up, as I thought it would, and
therefore deleted "Security." All is good in our land again! HA! Thanx for
taking the time to post to help others!
