Please help!

I'm having serious problems trying to burn CDs.

I've tried setting the IDE controller between DMA and PIO, reinstalling drivers, reinstalling Nero, forced ASPI, closing down other programs, choosing a slower speed but with no joy.

Here's my Nero log:

Impresive, but not very helpful.

Could you please tell us your system spec'

Is this shop bought Dell or home made?

What OS?

What CDR?

How is the CD connected?

It's a shop-bought Compaq Evo N1020v with a Pentium 4 (running at 2.40 GHz) and 224 MBs of RAM. I'm running Windows XP Pro with SP2 and the CD is an internal LG GCC-4240N laptop drive.

Well I see one big problem straight away ... not enough memory ... XP really needs at least 512Mb ram to be efficient.

I did re-read your 'log' and also noticed that there is only 43Mb of free physical ram. If the OS or software runs out of physical memory it has to use the hard drive.

While I point blank refuse to work on any CompCrap PC, Compaq used to make a reasonable laptop ... but as with most laptop makers, they have no comprehension as to what is a reasonable amount of ram, especially as that memory is being shared with the graphics. I have seen a brand new Toshiba with 128Mb running XP (sorry, I mean trying to run XP) What The Flipping ?

Have you ever been able to 'burn' a CD? … or is this something that has 'just happened'?

Turn off ALL no essential 'running' programs ... anything in the taskbar is a running program and see if you can free-up some more memory.

Buying more ram will not go amiss, even if it's not a direct cause to the problem. ;)

Thanks for the reply.

I know that 256MD is perhaps not enough but I've been able to burn CDs in the past without any problem. In the six months or so since I've last done this I've installed a lot of new software so I was wondering if there was possibly a conflict issue there.

As far as closing processes down, I can get the system down to about 22 without closing anything I'm not sure of. Which processes do I absolutley need? Also, I understand that you can setup a new user on XP so that it starts with minimal settings (ie like when you get a PC new) without reformatting and installing windows again. Do you know how to do this?

Never thought about 'limited' account, not sure if that would work, but you could try.

Just go to control panel/user accounts and set-up a new user.

Have you tried "shutting" down non esental programs and burning? unplug from the net & Turn off AV and such things that are running in the background.

Did you buy a different 'media' ... different suppy of CDs? ... there is a big difference in quality. are we talking DVD or just CDR? or both?

I've shut down as many processes as I can before I get a Task Manager Warning saying that shutting down a key process can disrupt the system. I can get it down to about 22 before this happens but I know that when you first install Windows XP you only have about a dozen. What I need to know are which ones are absolutely essential to Windows so that I can close down everythimng else safely?

I'm going to try other media in the meantime and see if that works.

I would not shutdown any 'proseces', I have 34 running, and would only turn off my AV program & MS Anti-Spyware ... 'cos that is all I have.

And I can do that from the taskbar ... but then I have PC with NO silly programs that want to load up when Windows does ... for example;
a scanner/printer/sound card program/instant messenger ... ;)

Got to Start/All Programs/Startup ... I have nothing in there, nothing is alowed to go there, and if it did, I would remove it ... if I want to start a program I will, not them. ;)

But please do try another medium, and see.

Still worth extending the life of your system with a little more ram ... cheap enough and a good selling point. :D
