Sorry for the new post. I can't get my javascript to work on "reply" - just
"new question", even though I have upgraded it to the newest version.

Mark, I typed in the info you gave me. In "Services", the "Startup Type"
says "Automatic" and the "Status" column was blank. Then I got this error
message:

"Could not start the Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS)
service on Local Computer. Error 1068: The dependency service or group
failed to start."

Could you help me out again? Thank you!

Are the following services running?

1. Network Connections
2. Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI)

Well, well! My "off again-on again" javascript decided to work this time!
Yes! I don't have to post again...

Ramesh, I may have something here. The Windows Management Instrumentation
service has the "Startup Type" as "DISABLED" and the "Status" is blank.

The Network Connections service has the "Startup Type" as "Manual" and the
"Status" as "Started".

Can I change the WMI service to "Automatic"? I didn't want to change
anything myself without checking with you. I don't want to do any further
damage!

Oh, I do have a Norton (Symantec) Firewall. Could this be causing the
problem? I can't find any way to get access to it. I'm not renewing my
subscription, and it runs out in two months. Will it automatically be
removed on the ending date or would I need to remove it? If so, could you
tell me how to do it or would I have to contact Symantec?

Thanks, Ramesh and Mark, for your help!! : ^ ) 'Preciate it!

Hi,

Yes. Set the WMI service to Automatic. There are lot of Windows components that use WMI. Windows Firewall wouldn't start if WMI is turned off.

If Symantec's Firewall is installed, it would disable the built-in firewall automatically. Perhaps you can contact Symantec support subscription/install/uninstall issues.

I found this post after hours of searching. My PC got infected by the Anti
Virus 2008 bogus malware. Anyway it caused some disturbances and after using
Highjack this, Spybot search and destroy and Malwarebyte's scan and remove I
found the junk. However I did do my best, not much, to find and take out the
stuff.

Anyway what happened was that the both the Windows Management settings were
stopped, the security services and the networkl connections, which this was
the last step THANK YOU, and finally the Windows firewall. Now after I could
not figure out which group association was needed I ran across the post about
turning on the network connections. This was the last step in getting this
thing back to whole.

Anway what I found out about this virus is that is comes shows up as a an
online scanner and shows phony infections to get you to pay for removal. Well
when you try to close the window, on the web it is one of those that will not
let you. So then pow your hit. I do not remember what the link was.

Anyway it gives a warning that the Firewall is turned off. Then when you
open the security option in the control panel the firewall, anti virus and
automatic update "On or Off" bubbles are gone. Every time you try to tell the
firewall to turn back on you get the same messages which mean you can't.

Thank you so very much for posting those 2 items to check. It was, again,
the network connections I could not figure out. I am running XP Pro SP3.
