Can't access websites in IE 6.0

I cannot get webpages to come up in my IE. I tried to ping www.yahoo.com but
it didn't find it. Then (by suggestion of a friend) I did a ping on their IP
address and it went through. I was told I needed to reload windows (I have
version 98se) and did that. I still cannot access webpages. Can anyone help
me out?

Check your 'hosts' file (no extension) to see if the IP names you
specify are listed and, if so, if they are pointing to 127.0.0.1
(localhost) which is you.

When was the last time you updated your anti-virus program and performed
a full scan? When was the last time you update your malware scanners,
like Ad-Aware, Spybot, or used the freebie online pest scanners to check
for an infection? Have you downloaded the latest version of CWShredder
(now from Intermute) to check for browser hijacking?

What happens when you disable your firewall? Does its logfile show that
your browser even attempted to make a connection through the firewall
(when it was enabled)?

What happens when you use msconfig.exe to disable all startup programs,
reboot, and check browsing using IP names (instead of IP numbers)?

What happens when you boot into Safe mode (with networking)? I haven't
used Windows 98 in about 4 years but I think you can select to enable
networking in a Safe Mode boot whereas the standard Safe Mode will
disable networking.

If none of that helps, run HijackThis and post its logfile to a
newsgroup that has users experienced in interrogating the logfile, like
alt.comp.*virus and alt.privacy.spyware, or post it at forums, like
http://www.lavasoftsupport.com/ and http://cexx.org/.
