Can't access My Documents over network

P

Peter

I have simple file sharing turned off. From my laptop I can open most
folders on my desktop computer, but not My Documents.
I can open C:\Documents and Settings\All Users but not C:\Documents and
Settings\Peter (where all my files reside).
If I look at the folder's Properties, it shows as shared on the network for
all users.

(In the past, I could access My Documents without any problems and did not
need to have an ID and password to get to the desktop machine.)

This may be a filessystem-permissions issue. Assuming it's an NTFS disk with
permissions set, then if the user-account (and password) on the laptop
differs from that on the desktop, you will not have filesystem-rights to the
userprofile contents.

Thanks Ian.

It is an NTFS disk but I do not know about permissions. How do I get
smarter?

Peter,

If you turned SFS off, did you setup a non-Guest account for access? Guest
access will not give access to "C:\Documents and Settings\Peter". You need to
setup account Peter on the laptop with an identical, non-blank password.

Thanks Chuck.

I am working my way through the info on the link you provided. One question
though, could I use simple file sharing and still get to My Documents (ie
Peter)? The laptop uses XP Home, the desktop is XP Pro.

Peter,

Simple File Sharing uses Guest only authentication. Guest will never provide
access to personal space, or system space. For access to either, you need
administrative / full access.

Un-share and then re-share the "Peter" folder. That will reset
permissions and might solve the problem.

If you're getting a prompt for user ID and password, the problem is
that the desktop computer doesn't recognize the user who's trying to
access the folder. In that case, create matching user accounts on the
laptop and desktop.
