Can't access 192.168.0.1 (dlink)??

Hi there, newbie here...

I've just set up:
XP >>> DLink DI-624 Router >>> DLink ADSL Modem >>> WWW

I successfully have internet access through the modem. But now I
intend to connect a second box to the router. Problem is, to configure
such things, the installation instructions say to connect to
192.168.0.1 but nothing happens and the browser times out.

So I reset the router to factory settings, and when it rebooted, the
firewall (Zone Alarm) tells me it has blocked a ping from 192.168.0.2.
What is that? The modem? Do I tell Zone alarm to make that a trusted
IP? Does that put a hole in the firewall?

Also, I can't find my modem or router hardware in Device Manager. If I
go into the Network Connections, all I see is the local "Intel Pro/100
VE Network Connection". Do I need to uncheck "Hide Network Connections
From Ignorant Buffoons" somewhere?

Eck, out of my depth at this point. I'd love a little direction.

If the router has multiple network ports on the back, just
plug in you ethernet cable and you should be good-to-go.
Make sure that if you are using DHCP from the router that
there is no static IP on the new box. If there is a static
IP address clear the addresses and choose "obtain
automatically".

BTW- if it is a router, you probably don't really NEED
Zone Alarm running. Try disabling it temporarily while you
are doing your setup.

Are you using DHCP on your computers? What IP addresses are they getting -
the Dlink should be doing DHCP serving by default. Type ipconfig <enter> in
a command prompt to see what IP addresses are assigned - ipconfig /all gives
you more info.

You need full communication on your LAN - just should be blocking stuff from
the Internet, and keeping an eye on what local apps/services are trying to
access the Internet outbound from your computers.

Why would you expect to?

No, but I'm highly amused at your phrasing! You will only see your local
hardware, such as your wired/wireless Ethernet cards, your analog modem,
etc., in there.

Is this the router you're using? http://www.dlink.com/products/?pid=6. It
says it includes a firewall - if so, may want to disable ZA on your client
computers (at least for testing). Are you getting a decent wireless
connection? IP addresses?

Thanks, "ipconfig /all" is very useful! Also I found some useful basic
info on firewalls if any other newbies this way come:

monitoring outgoing traffic).

So I can see that the router is 192.168.0.2 (Default Gateway, DHCP
server, DNS Server) but there's the rub. The Dlink installation manual
says go to http://192.168.0.1 and then sign in as "admin" to configure
the router. .0.1 times out, so I tried this on .0.2 and I got the
login screen, but trying to login gives me "401 unauthorised". Is
there a way I can reassign 192.168.0.1 to the router...?

Nothing on the DLink site about this problem, but I could post a query
if I hit a dead end...

Yes this is the one. I haven't tested the wireless yet (walk before
run).

...and then in a state of lunacy, stumbled into the control panel, open
the Network Connection and manually overwrote all IP & DNS addresses
with careless guesses. This misconfigured his system drastically, but
when he re-checked "Obtain IP address automatically" this reassigned
192.168.0.1 to his router!

Thanks for the help of both posters. I am now back on track.
