Canoscan N1240U - not recognized in XP

I had to recently reinstall XP Pro and now I can not get the scanner to
be recognized in device manager or as New Found Hardware.

I have followed all of the support suggestions including uninstalling
the drivers. When I try to install from the Canon CD I get to the point
where a window tells me: "the software required to scan images(the
TWAIN driver) is not installed"

I have gone to the Canon download site and downloaded the latest driver
but I continue to get the same message.

It should be noted that the scanner worked after the initial upgrade to
XP. It is only after the second reinstall that I am having this
problem.

Device manager does not list the scanner or other devices - like it had
previously.
Unplugging and replugging has has no effect.

One final note: I took the scanner to my neighbor and when I plugged
into his USB the "New Found hardware wizard" appeared immediately - so
I do not think there is a problem in my cable or the scanner. It
appears to be a software issue.

Any suggestions?

The issue is your computer still thinks the driver is installed or has been
marked as ignore.

Open Device manager and remove the CanoScan N1240U or unknown device with
the Red or Yellow mark.
You may need to have the scanner connected and turn on to appear in Device
manager, Maybe as Imaging devices.

In Windows XP, Device manager is found in Control Panel>System. Click the
Hardware Tab. Then the Device Manager button.

Remove the Software that is currently installed.
Disconnect the scanner.
Reboot computer.

Install the software for the scanner.
Reboot computer.
Connect the scanner and turn it on.
Windows should now find the new hardware and install the TWAIN driver.

If you can not find the scanner in the Device manager, You may have to do a
registry edit.

Tried you suggestion numerous times with the same result. I can not
find the scanner in the Device manager. It is not there!

When I initially upgraded from Win2000 to XP the scanner was recognized
and operated perfectly. It has only been in the last 10 days since I
had to re install XP that I am now having the problem. I have followed
all the Canon Support suggestion and yours BUT still have not seen any
changes.

Any other suggestions or How does one edit the registry?

Thanks,
Ed

You edit the registry very carefully! You can really screw up your computer
if you make a mistake. Any change is immediate and no undo.

Registry Editor how to start:

Start>Run. Type regedit<Enter> or click OK.
Find is under Edit Menu. The first thing to search for is "canoscan" without
quotes. The second search is "scangear" without quotes. Do one search all
the way though the registry.

One Key you may find is:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Canon\Scangear\10.2\devices\CNQ1240

The 10.2 may not be for the 1240, it is there for my canoscan 8400F. The
last part of the key in CNQ8400 for my 8400F.

Second reply:
If you just reinstalled XP, did you do a "clean install" reformat windows
partition and install XP and SP2 and windows Updates.

If you did not do a clean install, that may be your problem. It is best to
have a clean reformatted drive to install Window XP onto.

Did the regedit. Found my scanner N1240U listed:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\devices\Canoscan N1240u

There were 11 sub folders referring to the Button functions on the
scanner.

Also found many listings for Scangear/Canoscan Tool Box.

Should these files be there or do they need to be deleted?

What is next?

Are those keys still there after you have uninstalled the Scanner in either
the Start Menu or from Control Panel>Add/Remove programs?

After running the canoscan uninstall procedure and a reboot.
If you want to remove the Canoscan N1240U from the computer. (So that you
get back to before installed) then yes you delete the keys you found in the
registry.

With the scanner disconnected. (USB scanners must not be connected until the
software is installed).
After the keys are deleted, Reboot.

You should then Install the Cannon software.
Reboot.

The scanner should be connected and turned on, the computer should now find
new hardware.

Second attempt at a reply. I must have screwed up the first!

I tried all of your suggestions but have had no luck. The scanner is
not recognized nor listed in Device Manager.

I became so frustrated that I partitioned and formatted Drive C (I have
two hard drives) and reinstalled XP. XP found all my other hardware
i.e. HP Printer but not the scanner.

It should be noted that the scanner worked properly after the initial
upgrade to XP in Jan. It is only after the second reinstall that I am
having this problem. It appears that I did not format or partition the
c drive during that reinstall - that might be the problem. However, I
believe the recent reinstall should have corrected that problem. Is
there anything else that can be done or is this scanner never going to
be recognized again?

Thanks,
Ed

Since that scanner is powered through the USB port, it must be connected
directly to the computer. Can you be sure the scanner is getting power?

Are you getting any light from the leds?

Do you have anything else connected to the USB ports on that computer?

It is possible that the scanner has died a natural death.

Carl,

You found the problem - the USB had become disabled. I opened BIOS and
enabled the USB controller and this fixed the problem.

Funny thing but I also had to re insert the Mother board CD to
reinstall the sound driver. Both USB & Sound seem to have been
compromised by the reinstall of XP.Thanks for all you help.

Yep! That will do it!
Actually, you found it, I did not think of USB been turned off on the MB.

Sometimes in installing Windows XP one must turn off the peripherals.
Windows XP sometimes will get a blue screen while installing if you do not
turn off the peripherals (USB, Sound, SCSI).
