Canon Powershot A10 - USB-problems with xp

I have a Canon Powershot A10 camera which is not compatible with the drivers
in windows xp.

I have found the driver on the internet, a zip-file, with many files in it,
also an installation file.

I installed the driver, and then reinstalled the software for the camera,
except the USB-driver.

It is still not working. The pc freezes totally when I connect to the usb
drives, and I have to use the off button to shut down the pc.
I dont know where to go from here. Can anyone out there help me?

What PC and motherboard support chipset are you using?
It may be that chipset support drivers or Bios settings are involved.
Are the USB ports built in to the motherboard or on a plugin I/O card?

I have a Packard Bell Platinum, but I dont know what a chipset is, and I
dont know how to find out whether the USB ports are built in to the
motherboard or on a plugin I/O card....
Are there nothing I can do to make the new driver work with my software?
