Canon LBP-660 and XP sp2 problems

Canon printers seem to be more incompatible with Windows XP Service Pack 2
than other printers. My LBP-660 (@ LPT1 port) does not print any more, now
that I installed SP2. I've spent some hours in the internet to search for a
solution for this problem, but did not find. Canon helpdesk raised their
hands, they were familiar with the problem but the only solution they could
offer me was "get a new printer...". Maybe I will, and I'm pretty convinced
that it won't be Canon. Hard to say who to blame more, Canon or Microsoft?
Some source in internet adviced to get rid of SP2, but somehow it doesn't
feel like an optimal solution. Therefore I try to find a helping hand here
from usenet.

Now I got the following error message:
http://www.kolumbus.fi/4sale/CanonProblem/
Earlier in happened so that the print job went into the queue, waited there
several minutes until a blank page were printed and so on.

I've installed Win2000 driver, I've installed the patch from
http://www.softwarepatch.com/utilities/canon-xpsp2.html and done many other
things, without positive results.

Long thread of people in same situation at:

Might be a solution buried somewhere in it. Good luck!

Jouko - I ran into a problem with my ip5000 Canon printer and xp pro. After
attempting to print a file I went to the printer screen to delete the file
from the print queue. Computer locked up. I rebooted and, when the printer
initialized on startup, it printed the file that was in the queue. The only
fix I could find at the moment was to go into the start/settings/printers
and faxes screen, right click the printer, go to the properties/advanced
screen and change the printer from sending the print job to the spooler to
print directly fromt he printer. It work fine, although it is a royal pain
in the butt as I have to wait for the printer to complete a print job before
I have control of the computer again. I went through the entire attempt at
a fix that Canon tech support could muster up.

"The port LPT1 is not exist" error you can fix with a .bat file containing this:

"C:\WINDOWS\system32\net.exe stop spooler

C:\WINDOWS\system32\net.exe start spooler"

Without the " " :-D

If your printer is printing blanks or full black pages, after you installed XP
SP2, or opgraded your PC to a DEP (Data Execution Prevention) compatible CPU
(Athlon 64 in my case)

The solution is to deativate DEP:

Open your bootfile: C:\boot.ini

Find : /noexecute=optin
Replace "optin" with "AlwaysOff"
So it says : /noexecute=AlwaysOff
