Cannot write to CD-R's from XP after installing VMware

Hi,

I've recently installed VMware Workstation 4. The installer suggested that I
disable the autorun feature for the CD drive as it could cause strange
results with the guest operating systems that VMware manages. I accepted the
suggestion and the installer disabled the auto-run feature.

I've just tried to burn some digital pictures to a CD using the windows XP
drag-and-drop burning method--ie., "Write thse files to CD". (as I've done
countless times before installing VMware). After I enter the title of the
CD, and hit "Next", I get a message window from the wizard saying "There is
no disc in the drive. Please insert a writeable CD into the drive D:\".

I, of course, have a CD in the drive. The CD is the last in a batch for
which I've had no problems. I also tried a CD from a new batch with the same
result. I used Roxio EasyCD Creator to burn the pictures with no problem.
However, I miss the drag and drop method native to XP.

I wondering if disabling autorun from installing VMware may have affected
things. How do I re-enable auto-run? I've Google'd this and seen postings
about manually editing the registry. There's got to be some standard GUI way
to do this (I don't like playing with the registry unless I absolutely have
to). I'm thinking that the "Autoplay" tab on the Properites page for the CD
drive does not apply as these options only determine how auto-play should
behave, not whether its enabled or disabled.

Also, VMware is not running when I tried this.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Mark

My Computer> rt click > Properties> check the recording
tab see if it's checked for native burning.

Use roxio EC direct CD in 5 or drag anf drop in 6

right click the CD burner icon and select Recording Tab. Then ensure that
the box to "Enable recording ...." is checked.

The burning depends on having the basic autoinsert feature working to
enable it to detect the blank disk. I'm not too sure about the
interaction with VM Ware, but you would need to restore the base feature
- I would suggest Use TweakUI - one of the XP Powertoys from (if you
have installed XP SP1)
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/powertoys.asp

If you have not installed SP1, the earlier version can be found at
http://download.microsoft.com/download/whistler/Install/2/WXP/EN-US/TweakUiPowertoySetup.exe

Once installed you will find it in Start - All Programs - Powertoys for
Windows XP

Its My Computer - Autoplay - Drives page have the relevant letter
checked.

Then in My Computer you can r=click the drive - Properties and on the
Autoplay page set all types of content to 'No Action'
