Cannot use shared printer (one way connection only)

I cannot use a printer connected to my home pc from my laptop, neither can I
see files of the home PC. The home PC can access files on the laptop without
any problems.

When I try to install the network printer I do see it if I press 'browse',
but when I select it it says: 'Windows cannot connect to the printer. Either
the printer name is incorrect, or the specified printer has lost its
connection
to the server'

I have File and Printer sharing enabled on both computers. I have even
disabled the firewall (Zone Alarm)and the Windows Firewall is not running,
but I've had no luck whatsoever. I used the 'Net View' command to try to see
the home PC and the response I got was:

"Windows cannot find the network path. Verify that the network path is
correct an
d the destination computer is not busy or turned off. If Windows still
cannot fi
nd the network path, contact your network administrator."

When I tried to Ping the home PC it did it succesfully. Does anyone have
hany ideas? Thanks

I checked the Computer browser service and its enabled on bothe computers

CONFIG:
Win XP Pro, both computers.
ZA installed, configured with both computers on trusted zone

Francis,

Disabling Zone Alarm is known to not be 100% effective. You should enable it,
then configure it properly. Or enable, then un install it, per procedures:
<http://nh2.nohold.net/noHoldCust25/Prod_1/Articles55646/CompleteUninstallNonNT.html>

You could also have a browser problem (no I'm not talking about Internet
Explorer).

Make sure the browser service is running on the home computer. Control Panel -
Administrative Tools - Services. Verify that the Computer Browser, and the
TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper, services both show with Status = Started. Disable the
browser on the laptop. Power both computers off. Power the home computer on,
then the laptop.

The Microsoft Browstat program will show us what browsers you have in your
domain / workgroup, at any time.

You can download Browstat from either:
<http://www.dynawell.com/reskit/microsoft/win2000/browstat.zip>
<http://rescomp.stanford.edu/staff/manual/rcc/tools/browstat.zip>

Browstat is very small (40K), and needs no install. Just unzip the downloaded
file, copy browstat.exe to any folder in the Path, and run it from a command
window, by "browstat status". Make sure all computers give the same result.

For more information about the browser subsystem (very intricate), see:

Thanks a lot, problem solved. The browstat program was very useful. With it I
figured out that one computer was using the TCP protocol and the other was
using the IPX protocol. I uninstalled the last one and it works like a charm.

Francis,

Excellent. Thanks for the feedback.

It always helps if both parties in a conversation speak the same language.
