Cannot update Windows Defender

E

Eric

It has been a while since I have been able to update Windows Defender.

It tells me that Windows Defender hasn't been updated in 123 days.

Everytime I check for new updates, I get the following message in the
notification area.

"Windows Defender was unable to complete the update: 0x80244019"

I tried following the resolution in the KB Article 918355 on how to
troubleshoot update issues for Windows Defender Beta 2 in this link below.
The resolution didn't help me.

I also just today uninstalled and downloaded Defender from the Microsoft
Download Center and reinstalled it. The problem still persists. If anybody
can help me solve this that will be great. If not, I'm going to uninstall
Defender and use a different program for helping me against spyware.

Hello Eric,

Have you tried going to Windows Update and checking for available updates?

Whatever you do, (installing and updateting or unistalling) always as a
adinistratºr.
This is the key!
The installation as an admin is not enough.
You needed to login as an admin.

Gº to Windows Update, select Express (Get high-priority updates), and apply
all offered updªtes
http://update.microsoft.com

Once that is finished, can you verify the update installs? There are many
pre-requisite files which are needed from windows update and signature update
with windows defender will fail until you hªve these files.

Your IT dept/Admin must permit and publish WDs definitions from the internal
corporate WSUS server.
So talk/mail him/them and ask for permission.

AutoUpdate--the native automatic update mode of Windows Defender uses the

If your windows update is pointing to your local WSUS, then you must include
the Windows Defender in synchronization setting.
In Products selection, please include Windows Defender
In Update classifications, please include Definition Updates

You must synchronize the server and approve the definition for clients to
get the latest definition.

I had a similar issue, I have a Windows SBS03 that serves as a PDC, and I
thought it was the firewall that wouldn't allow Defender to update. I
uninstalled Defender with no solution. The I downloaded the most updated
version and it seems to look for updates but without notification that there
are new updates I'm not certain if this is a fix or, just a workaround...

Brandon--is it possible that your SBS server is also running WSUS to
distribute patches?

That's a good start. If AutoUpdate is functional on your system, then
future updates should be automatic. There's one today, so wait and see.
