Try port 587 instead of port 25. Some BT customers are saying this
change fixed it for them.

As I said I'm no expert - but you could try - From Contol Panel - select
Internet Options, then on the Connections tab select "Never dial a
connection" - then click on tthe "lan settings" button - and in that tab
ensure "Automatically detect settings" is ticked.
If that works - there is now a solution to the email problem - even though
BT have not yet fixed it - which is in the Windows Mail - Tools - Click on
your account, click properties, click Advanced - and then change the Smtp
port from 25 to 587 (but write down somewhere that it was 25 - in case you
ever need to put it back). I have no idea why using port 587 should work -
someone reported it - either further on in this thread or in other similar
threads. I've just tried it. I set one account I have to be port 587 and sent
and email to another account I have - I left the 2nd account with port 25.
The message sent ok - and came in to the 2nd account - but when I tried
replying from the 2nd account(still set as port 25) it just stuck on
"connecting". So I've now set both of my accounts to be port 587 - and I can
happily send emails.

Thanks for this solution (to use Port 587) -why on earth it works I do not
know - and I do not really care - it's nice and simple and easy to change
back if it doesn't work - but it does work. I really do not think I could
face getting another pidgeon english reply from the BT .. or wait a further 5
weeks for them to put right whatever it is they have put wrong.

Unless one is in a away-from-home travel status, there is no logical
reason why port 587 would work when port 25 doesn't. All I can
surmise is that BT has some different server software running on
the different ports.

Aliro, thank you for your kind suggestions. I did change the Advance setting
to port 587, but was unable to effect a change in the behaviour of the
connection instruction. The initial action on booting up Windows Mail is the
appearance of the Dial-up dialog box. Accordingly I'm unable to determine if
the remedy you proposed for the port identifier change has actually
accomplished anything.

My inclination is to consider re-installing the BT broadband, and allowing
that installation to reset all the defaults. Do you happen to know if this
can be accomplished without messing up my address book, bookmarks, and
existing mail files?

Thanks for your kind efforts so far.

I don't think re-installing BT Broadband will lose anything, but I woud
advise you to try a few other remedies first.
Can you get to the internet - on the affected machine ?
Try the Windowshelp web site (windowshelp.microsoft.com) to see if there is
an answer for you.
Maybe try -
"http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Windows/en-US/Help/33307acf-0698-41ba-b014-ea0a2eb8d0a81033.mspx"
- which explains how to diagnose and repair network problems.
I'm not on my Windows Vista machine at the moment so I'm not sure how things
look - but is there a "Connections" tab on Your mail account
properties/settings - if so does this need changing to "never dial a
connection" ? (and if so also on any or all the other mail accounts you might
use).
Sorry I can't be of more help, but I hope you get your problems sorted soon.

Aliro, thanks for your helpful suggestions -- and the all-important
hand-holding. It was psychologically helpful to feel that someone would take
an interest and provide assistance. I learned a lot from the various sites
you mentioned, and deepened my overall knowledge. It appears that I solved
the problem involving WindowsMail's thinking I had a dial-up connection by
going to Tools and taking a deep breath while eliminating my email account
and then re-establishing it. That apparently reset my defaults. The original
problem with inability to send mail persisted, but on your suggestion I again
changed the port identifier from the re-established default of 25 to 587,
which happily led to a deluge of mail from my overflowing webmail account. So
it appears that I have a happy ending after all. Thanks again.

I am on BTbroadband with Norton 360 and changing the SMT port from 25 to 587
worked perfectly, so thanks for the help!

Is it unrealistic to think that BT might notice this and post this helpful
advice on their website?

Since it would involve initiative and a commitment
to customer support... in a word... yes.

Let's not be harsh on BT though since they do exhibit
remarkable efficiency on the odd occasion.
Fail to pay your bill on time they'll
cut you off most professionally.

I read in another forum that the changeover from port 25 to
port 587 was planned between Yahoo and BT a while ago, and
somehow BT failed to inform their customers or even their own
tech support. The port change was made to enhance security
and portability.

If you want BT's attention don't pay a bill.

I have the same problem...am not running Norton or McAfee. Has been working
fine for months till yesterday. Can someone help?

Do you get an error message when you try to send? If so, right-click on your
error message, copy, then paste it into a reply here.
We can't do much troubleshooting without the complete error message.

Which antivirus do you have?

Ms. Gracie,

If you're having the same problem, please post the error message that is giving you.
