Cannot see 1 of 3 computers

G

Guest

Computer A (new main) computer ethernet connected to D-Link Router
Computer B (old) computer ethernet connected to D-Link Router
Computer C (laptop) wirelessly connected to D-Link Router

"All" computers can see Computer B & C in Network Places and can share files
and B & C can see and use printers on Computer A.

All computers running XP with SP2, except Computer B doesn't have SP2 (won't
update properly -- but B works fine).

However, "nobody" can see Computer A in Network Places.

Any thoughts -- this is driving me crazy -- trying to move files around.

Run the Network Setup Wizard on Computer A (and only on that computer,
even if the Wizard tells you otherwise), and tell it that the computer
connects to the Internet through a residential gateway. That will
create a shared documents folder that should appear in My Network
Places on all of the computers. You can right-click and share any
other desired disks and folders.

Shares don't always appear immediately, though. If they don't, access
Computer A from one of the others by typing A's actual computer name
in the Start | Run box in this format:

\\comptuerA

Ron,

For any system running Windows XP SP2, check Windows Firewall, and make sure the
File and Printer Sharing exception is enabled. Any third party firewalls? Make
sure they're properly configured too.

Next check for a browser conflict between the computers. I"m not talking about
Internet Explorer here. The browser is the program that allows any computer to
see any other computer on the LAN. For a 3 computer LAN, you need the browser
running on just 2 of them.

Identify the 2 computers that stay online the most, and make sure the browser
service is running on them. Control Panel - Administrative Tools - Services.
Verify that the Computer Browser, and the TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper, services both
show with Status = Started. Stop, then Disable the browser service on the other
computer.

After checking / disabling / enabling as above, power all computers off to reset
the browser settings on each. Then power all back on again.

The Microsoft Browstat program will show us what browsers (I'm not talking about
Internet Explorer here) you have in your domain / workgroup, at any time.
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=188305

You can download Browstat from either:
<http://www.dynawell.com/reskit/microsoft/win2000/browstat.zip>
<http://rescomp.stanford.edu/staff/manual/rcc/tools/browstat.zip>

Browstat is very small (40K), and needs no install. Just unzip the downloaded
file, copy browstat.exe to any folder in the Path, and run it from a command
window, by "browstat status". Make sure all computers list the same master
browser.
For more information about the browser subsystem (very intricate), see:

Steve, Didn't get the question/option for "computer connects to the Internet
through a residential gateway". I have run the Network Setup Wizard on the
other computers in the past, and nothing seems to change (by the way, Network
Setup Wizard won't run on the laptop -- double click it and nothing
happens?). Your \\computerA is interesting -- I marked a folder shared on
Computer A, and it shows up on Computer B after //computerA, but only in a
separate window -- nothing shows up in Network Places.

Chuck, The Computer Browser is not running on Computer B -- just says manual
-- don't know why. Was I also supposed to stop the TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper on
B -- it is running -- couldn't really tell from your response. Computer
Browser and TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper is running on Computer A & C. Also, it
looks like you have to go to Properties to disable -- is that right --
anyway, I didn't disable the Computer Browser on Computer B since it was not
started -- I did reboot Computer B -- no change.

Ron,

Stopping the Browser service is sufficient. Which computers is it running on
now? What results do you get from "browstat status" on all 3 computers? Did
you power all 3 computers off?

If the Wizard shows a screen saying "Do you want to use the shared
connection?", then it's already set up to use the router. In that
case, click "Yes, use the existing shared connection for this
computer's Internet access (recommended)".

Otherwise, select the Wizard's connection option "This computer
connects to the Internet through a residential gateway or through
another computer on my network or through a residential gateway".
Your \\computerA is interesting -- I marked a folder shared on

That's exactly what should happen. You can access the share through
the new window. To make the shared folder appear in My Network
Places, you can either:

1. Click "Add a network place" and follow the prompts to create a
shortcut to it.

or:

2. Drag and drop the shared folder from the new Window into My Network
Places.

Chuck, Yes, I did a complete "Power Off" (just did re-boots earlier) and
still no change. Browstat doesn't seem to want to run. I downloaded it, but
when i run it, a Command Window pops up and goes away so fast I can't see
anything in the window. Still don't have a clue as to why Computer A is not
seen on the Home Computing network. (One somewhat thing is: under Entire
Network (under My Network Places) on Computer A, I only see one entry
(Microsoft Windows Network) whereas on the other 2 visable networked
computers (B & C), under Entire Computer, I see 3 entries (MS Terminal
Services, MS Windows Network, and Web Client Network) -- don't know what any
of these do except that I do see the MSHOME network under the MS Windows
Network entry.

Ron,

Try running browstat from a command window / MS-DOS Prompt (Start - Run - "cmd")
or (Programs - Accessories).

Please provide ipconfig information for each computer.
Start - Run - "cmd". Type "ipconfig /all >c:\ipconfig.txt" into the command
window - Open c:\ipconfig.txt in Notepad, make sure that Format - Word Wrap is
NOT checked!, copy and paste entire contents into your next post. Identify
operating system (by name, version, and SP level) with each ipconfig listing.

Steve, no, I can't get any of your suggestions to work -- and seem to be
digressing -- now the Run \\computerA command on Computer B doesn't even work
any more -- getting "The network path was not found". Should I be able to
see Computer A under Network Places on Computer A (Computer B & C always see
themselves under Network Places). This should't be this hard should it --
the other computers just fell into place. I will mention that under Entire
Network on Computers B & C, I see entries for MS Terminal Services, MS
Windows Network and Web Client Network, whereas on Computer A, I only see the
MS Windows Network entry under the Entire Network.

Make sure that a firewall on A isn't blocking access.

In the meantime, try manually creating a shortcut in My Network Places
on B or C. Click "Add a network place" and specify the network
address in the format \\computer\share. Then, click the shortcut and
see what happens.

Ron,

You're running Teredo Tunneling, aka IPV6, on Computers B & C. Do you need
access to IPV6 addresses?

Please start by un installing IPV6, aka Advanced Networking, from the list of
items under Local Area Connection Properties. You only need the following items
in the list:

If you need IPV6, you can install it later. After you get file sharing working.

After removing IPV6, please rerun "ipconfig /all" and post again.

Chuck, OK, here goes again -- sorry, I may have messed up the previous word
wrap settings. Also before I post tht ipconfig stuff, you mentioned I only
needed Client ..., File and Print..., and Internet Protocol in Properties --

<SNIP>

Ron,

Interesting that the laptop has (had?) IPX/SPX and NetBIOS. With superfluous
protocols, your network can get a little flaky - for instance, name to address
resolution might use any protocol in any order. If the browser uses multiple
protocols, things could get weird too.

Let's enumerate your problems. Did you copy browstat.exe onto your computers?
Is it in a path folder? Please do that, then proceed.

Take the following code (everything inside the "#####"). (Please verify
computer names and ip addresses).

Open Notepad. Ensure that Format - Word Wrap is not checked. Highlight then
Copy the code (Ctrl-C), precisely as it is keyed, and Paste (Ctrl-V) into
Notepad. Verify, and correct, names and addresses if necessary.
Save the Notepad file as "cdiag.cmd", as type "All Files", into the root folder
"C:\".
Run it by Start - Run - "c:\cdiag".
Wait patiently.
When Notepad opens up displaying c:\cdiag.txt, first check Format and ensure
that Word Wrap is NOT checked! Then, copy the entire contents (Ctrl-A Ctrl-C)
and paste (Ctrl-V) into your next post.

Do this from all computers, please, with all computers powered up and online.

Issue 1 is most likely a misbehaving firewall. What firewalls do you have, or
have ever had, on Ron? Ron is running XP SP2 - is the File and Printer Sharing
exception enabled?

Also, look at registry key [HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa], value
restrictanonymous.
<http://www.microsoft.com/windows200...2000/techinfo/reskit/en-us/regentry/46688.asp>

http://support.microsoft.com/?id=246261
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=296403

The above articles refer to Windows 2000. Remember WinXP is NT V5.1, and Win2K
is NT V5.0.

Have you used the Registry Editor before? If not, it's a scary tool, but it's
pretty simple once you get used to it. Here are a couple articles that might
help:
<http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/...home/using/productdoc/en/tools_regeditors.asp>
<http://www.annoyances.org/exec/show/registry>

Just remember to backup the key (create a registry patch) for
[HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa] before making any changes, if
appropriate.

From the Annoyances article:
You can create a Registry patch by opening the Registry Editor, selecting a
branch, and choosing Export from the File menu. Then, specify a filename, and
press OK. You can then view the Registry patch file by opening it in Notepad
(right-click on it and select Edit). Again, just double-click on a Registry
patch file (or use Import in the Registry Editor's File menu) to apply it to the
registry.

Issue 2 - dropped packets between Ron / Pavilion and Claudette - is a network
(probably wireless) issue. Have you loaded the most up to date drivers for the
wireless card?

Issue 3 - Claudette is running a browser. You need to either un install
IPX/SPX, or Stop then Disable the browser service on Claudette, or both.

If you're going to have 2 computers running a browser (recommended for a 3
computer LAN), then Pavilion should be the backup, not Claudette.

Do you really need IPX / SPX on Claudette? What other network is it used on?

OK, Chuck -- thanks again for the help and analysis. Let me respond to some
of your questions:

1) Just a couple of minutes before I read your post, I sent off a Firewall
question to the D-Link tech support guys. I don't understand their firewall
setup -- don't even know how it is working -- and don't know why it would
single out computer A on the home net. It has occured to me that this looks
like some sort of firewall problem -- that's how firealls are supposed to
work, isn't it.

As far as the Windows XP Firewall is concerned, File and Printer Sharing,
Remote Assistance, and UPnP Framework(?) is enabled on Computer A (Ron), and
the same on Computer C (claudette) -- Zone Alarm running on Computer B
(Pavilion).

I haven't done anything exotic, anywhere, because things are starting to get
complicated -- so I pretty much go with default settings whenever possible.

I have done Registry things, several years ago. I will look into the things
you have suggested, carefully. As this is a new computer, as of December,
2004, I wouldn't think too much is screwed up yet.

2) Yeah, dropped packets, I didn't want to throw that into the situation.
I have been having that problem since Nov, 2003 -- when I purchased the
laptop for my wife -- and set up a 2 computer network. It is beyond annoying
-- she pretty much does't use it much except for email. It hangs up when
surfing the Internet (i.e. screen updates just stop, and recover much later
after timeouts, I think -- maybe because of packet drops?). The most
annoying things is the email operation. The system does not seem to have
problems receiving email, but when sending email, we get lots of Server timed
out errors. I have had to re-send the email as many as 20 (yeah, 20) times
before it will go out -- beyond frustrating.

The laptop has the Centrino chip set in it -- can that stuff be updated.

As far as the email problem is concerned, it has gotten better ever since
last week when I rearranged my computer area -- moving my newer computer onto
my main table and relocating the older computer to another table a few feet
away. Ever since I have had the router, it has been positioned right next to
a 23" CRT monitor -- whereas it is now behind my 17" LCD monitor and the 23"
monitor on its way to good will, once I get all of my files transferred off
of it. I am now wondering if the large CRT was affecting the wireless
transmissions. Sometimes I wonder how the laptop is even working when it
seems to be dropping probably 50% of the pings.

3) Regarding the laptop, I don't need any of the TCP stuff I mentioned in my
previous note -- at least as far as I know of -- it is not used on any other
networks -- I don't even know what that other stuff is. As I said, I don't
start changing default things because I generally don't know what I am
changing. However, as I said, I am not doing anything exotic (just using
laptop in my home for wireless access and non-Internet stand-alone use) -- so
if I don't need it, I am more than willing to delete it. As far as you know,
should I go ahead and uninstall the Network Monitor and the other 2 NW Link
middle-ware programs.

OK, sorry for the long response. I will look into the Registry things you
suggested and get back to you -- but hope I don't have to change anything.
As I said, I have only been using this system for a few months, so don't know
what I could have done to mess it up.
