Cannot Run XPsp2 Setup CD to add windows components

B

Brian K

Windows XP SP2

Whenever I try to run XP Setup to add and remove components I get the
following error:

"Setup was unable to open information file hide-4. Contact your system
administrator. The specific error code is 0x7b at line 2088999592."

I've updated and run my anti-virus program. If I only knew what the
actual name of the information file is called I could reload it onto my
hard drive from my backup.

I would appreciate your help.

Thank you,

I'm sorry that does not apply here, Peter. This isn't a hardware or device driver error, but caused by a syntax error in the Sysoc.inf file. Here is my proposed solution for this problem.

Expanding a fresh copy of sysoc.inf file from the source should help. The target directory is C:\Windows\Inf.

See:

Expanding Sysoc.inf file from the Windows XP CD

Alternately, you may use the SysOCFix.exe tool (with /createnew switch) which I wrote, to recreate the Sysoc.inf file.

Ramesh,

I did a Search and located the sysoc.inf file. I was able to open it in
a text reader. I think I've isolated the line that the error message
references and the one right before it. It is demarcated by ##.

Starter=StartOC.dll,StarterOCSetupProc,StartOC.inf,HIDE,7
##AutoUpdate=,hide,hide4##

Is it possible that the error message (Setup was unable to open
information file hide-4) is pointing to this line within sysoc.inf? If
so what file or command is represented by AutoUpdate=,hide,hide-4, box
box? I await your response.

I did just that after posting here. The new copy from XP CD was missing
those lines. That was the fix. Apparently those lines were included by
some errant software and weren't needed. Everything works fine without
them. Thanks. BrianK
