cannot register/modem

I gave a modem to a friend of mine which he could not
install, so I did it for him. It is a Mototrola SM 56.
Now when (re)booting, at startup I get a message: Cannot
register with SM56 driver, press ok to exit.
If I want to connect thrue this modem to the internet, the
system reboots immediately!
My brother is MCSE- certified but is unfamiliar with this
problem. Please help...?

This is probably not a Windows registry issue directly.

AFAICT the SM56 is a Soft Modem ("Winmodem"). My advice (no flames
please) is to toss it and buy a "real" modem.

Be that as it may, did you get and install the latest drivers for this
unit and OS?

I suggest either the MS "hardware" groups or a Motorola group or
support site.
