No.
Yet they are connected via Vigour 2600X router which is said to ack as a
firewall

Is that router between you and their computers?
No.

Check the IP address of each computer. Make sure they are in the same
subnet.

I have no "their". Everything is sitting on my desk. It's just two
computers connected via router. The router is connected to the phone line

255.255.255.0 is a subnet mask not an IP address. Your addresses need to be
in the same network. Assuming the router is providing your IP, your
addresses should look something like this:
192.168.X.Y where X is the same number on both machines and Y is a
different number. The subnet mask should be the same.

Rob,
Mentioning subnet mask, I was answering your question if the computers are
on the same subnet.
If this is irrelevane, where should I look to see if they are on the same
subnet?
Regarding IP addesses - I mentioned in my original message that for poingin
I was using the IP addresses returned by IPCONFIG. These are indeed
192.168.1.10 and 192.168.1.11

When you say connected via router, that's where I'm curious. Do you mean you
have a firewall/router with a built-in hub or switch?

Many firewalls don't allow ICMP (ping works thought it) by default

OK. What should I do in this case? Also it used to ping fine and then
stopped, therefore it should not be cause by firewall which has always been
there
