cannot open our database

Hi, all our caseworkers currently use a database (file size 81.4MB) to hold
all the information on our clients. Since last week, we cannot open the
database or access the file. The following message appears;

"The Document 'casework.mdb' caused a serious error the last time it was
opened. Would you like to continue opening it?'

we click 'yes' and then another message appears;
'The database 'THE DATABASE PATH' needs to be repaired or isn't a database
file.
you or another user may have unexpectedly quit a Microsoft Office Access
while a Microsoft Office Access database was open.
Do you want Microsoft Office Access to attempt to repair the database?'

I click 'yes'

Then the SEND ERROR REPORT box opens and the program closes. We have just
found that the backup has not been working for a while, which means we stand
to lose alot of data if we cannot get the file to run.

I have tried searching google and support.microft, but haven't found
anything that helps. I downloaded Jetcomp but ain't having any luck.

Our network is running 'WINDOWS XP PROFESSIONAL VERSION 5.1, SERVICE PACK 2'
and 'MICROSOFT OFFICE ACCESS 2003'
any advice would be helpful, cheers,

Not a Windows issue. Post to this group (via Newsreader):

Jamie,

If all the users are out of the database then you can compact & repair the
database

As this is obviously a network DB have you checked your profile? Maybe that
is corrupt & you may notice that other things are missing when you're logged
in. If someone else logs in to that machine, does the same error exist? If
not then it is a profile issue. Otherwise you need to look at your MS Access
install.

Will await your reply,

noone on our server can access it. The file is saved on our server. How do I
compact it? I tried using Jetcomp, but that didn't work.

I thought perhaps we would need an updated service pack, but would that not
just stop the problem in future?

You mention "caseworkers". Where is your IT Dept.? Why are you not
calling them immediately? Also, make sure you have backups!

If you really want to try and get help in a newsgroup, do as previously
suggested and post to an Access newsgroup. Make sure you include the
version of Access that you are using. Troubleshooting Access databases
requires specialized skills and you don't want to be messing about with
this blindly.

Sounds like it's irretrievably corrupted. Restore it from the most
recent backup.

Small charity or not, what will happen if you destroy your database? You
always have the option of having a local professional come on-site. I
understand that you want to save money, but there's no sense in being
penny-wise, pound-foolish. I'm not trying to be too harsh with you so
please don't be hurt; it's just that my clients are small businesses
just like you and I know first-hand what can happen. So please take my
cautions to you as coming from someone who cares.

If you have Windows XP, you have Outlook Express. Outlook will call the
newsgroups using OE. Here are instructions:
