Cannot open a word document

A word document which I edit daily suddenly could not be opened .
Error message says-
The document name or path is not valid. Try these suggestions
*check the file permissions for the doc or drive. (how do I do this?)
*use the file open dialogue box to locate the document. (I believe I did
this)

The answer was " the command you selected is not available from this short
cut menu" same when I went through my documents.
