Cannot load windows

I have recently got a virus and Norton told me to go onto their website and
apply a search which would search for that virus. It said it had found 1
corrupt file and that it needed to restart. I have restarted the computer and
then later that day turned it off. The next day when I came to it, it loaded
past the bios and Norton GoBack screen and then just before it loaded windows
it came up, and still does come up with the screen saying that it had not
been shut down correctly and that you can choose to either load it in normal,
safe mode or the last known good configeration ect. However when ever i move
the up or down arrow, the counter disapears as it counts down from 30, and
then the computer freezes. The pc also freezes if you let the counter count
down normally. I then cannot load windows or do anything with the computer.

Any suggestions?

Please post a copy of the Stop Error Report.

Disable automatic restart on system failure. This should help by
allowing time to write down the STOP code properly. Right click on
the My Computer icon on the Desktop and select Properties, Advanced,
Start-Up and Recovery, System Failure and uncheck box before
Automatically Restart.

Do not re-enable automatic restart on system failure even after you have
solved the problem as it's better disabled. Check for variants of the
Stop Error message.

An alternative is to keep pressing the F8 key during Start-Up and select
option - Disable automatic restart on system failure.

Gerry you may have misunderstood me. I cannot load up to the desktop as I
cannoy load windows to be able to right click on the my computer icon.
However I can click F8 on load up although when ever i select any of these
options the up and down arrow still works however when i select them the
computer freezes and goes no further again.

The error message reads:

We apologize for the inconvenience but windows did not start successfully. A
recent hardware or software change might have caused this.

If your computer stopped responding, restarted unexpectedly, or was
automatically shut down to prevent your files and folders, choose last known
good configuration to revert to the most recent settings that worked.

If a previous start up attempt was interrupted due to a power failure or
because the power or reset button was pressed, or if you arent sure what
caused the problem choose start windows normally

Safe Mode
Safe Mode with Networking
Safe Mode with Command Prompt

Last Know Good Configuration (your most recent settings that worked)

Start Windows Normally

Use the up and down keys to move the highlight to your choice.
Seconds until Windows starts: (Moves from 30 ->0)

Hope this helps

I didn't misunderstand. I was hoping the F8 option might get us further
forward.

Disconnect all peripherals except keyboard, mouse and monitor and try
again.

Do you have a Windows XP CD?

Yes I do have a Windows XP CD as it was an upgrade from Windows 98, so I just
bought the full version. However it has now just gone from bad to worse as
now when I turn it on the monitor will not even acnowlege that there is a
computer there. When I turn them both on, the monitor has a green light to
say it is on, if it finds a pc it stays green, if not it goes into standby
with a yellow light, and now it never moves out of this?

Alastair:
Can you give any consideration to simply making (or at least attempting) a
fresh install of the XP OS, understanding that all your programs &
user-created data would be gone? Is this a practical alternative in your
situation? Assuming this fresh install of the OS would be successful you
would then need to fresh install all your programs & applications as well as
download/install all the MS critical updates since SP2. (I'm assuming that
if you did make a fresh install of the OS, it would be with a XP
installation CD containing SP2). So I don't know if this would be a
practical approach in your current situation before you explore all other
potential remedies.

You obviously have another computer at hand since you're able to post these
messages. Would it be feasible to install your present HDD that's currently
in the problem machine as a secondary HDD in a functioning PC and at least
back up your user-created data on that disk (assuming, of course, that the
HDD is non-defective and its data can be accessed from a functioning
machine)?

Obviously I'm assuming that there's no hardware problem involved here and
that the basic problem you're encountering is a badly corrupted HDD that is
non-defective. On the other hand, have you considered the possibility of
just undertaking a Repair install of the OS? Are you familiar with that
process? It might just do the trick. But that virus problem you originally
mentioned together with the Norton GoBack program makes me somewhat
apprehensive about the future stability of even a successful Repair install
of the OS. But it's something to consider.

How old is this computer?

My reaction is the simplest solution is to buy new hard disk and to
reinstall Windows 98, using your XP upgrade and somehow obtain an SP2
CD. You can borrow an SP2 CD as they are usable on any machine. You
would then need to reinstall your programmes. You can then install the
problematic hard drive as a second drive and attempt to recover the
data.

Another option is to replace the computer and put the problematic hard
drive in as a second drive with a view to attempting to recover your
data files.

Is your copy of Windows 98 an OEM or retail version? If it is an OEM
version you have no problem just replacing the hard drive but if you opt
for a new computer you should buy a new full copy of XP.

Further attempts to salvage your existing system could prejudice data
recovery.

I have already bought a new hard drive as it was only a 15GB hard drive in
the first place so it needed replacing anyway. Well I believe the pc was
first built in 1999, but then they were throwing it away at my dads work so i
got it, i then have upgraded everything I believe around 2004 bit by bit.
Would it still work if I put windows vista on my new primary hard drive with
a windows XP still running on the hard drive that isnt responding?

I never got any CDs with the computer so i dont have anything to do with
windows 98, I believe i bought the oem version of XP as it was bought from a
online shop, although I am not totally sure?

I think it would be a mistake to try to put Vista on a machine built in
1999.

I have upgraded it though. Now nothing except the case is left from the 1999
model It now has 128mb GeForce FX5200 grafics card, AMD Athlon XP 3000+
(2.2GHz I think) 1.2GB RAM with an extra 2GB waiting to be installed, and a
250GB hard drive with a 500GB hard drive waiting to be installed also

I imagine you may now be OK to install Vista if you have not already
done so? If you have not already installed Vista and are still
contemplating doing so you need to run the Vista Upgrade Advisor.
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/windowsvista/aa905075.aspx

You may find that some peripherals and programmes that you do not wish
to replace, which run fine in Windows XP do not do so in Vista. Also I
installed a 128 mb Graphics Card and could not get a totally
satisfactory Score in Vista. I am not able to install a better graphics
card because my power management will not support a better card. Vista
runs fine but I do not think I am seeing it's full potential. Not being
a Gamer I suspect it less disappointing for me than it might be for
others.
