cannot install

When I try to upgrade to the latest version (mine is
expired) today I get:

"Error reading setup initialization file". Anything I
can do to avoid downloading the whole thing again as I am
on dial-up?

No, it looks as if your download is corrupt. You need to empty your
Temporary Internet Files, then download and save a fresh copy of the MSAS
installer by following the download links from
http://www.microsoft.com/spyware

You can check the validity of your downloads by right-clicking on the
downloaded installer, select Properties, and click the "Digital Signature"
tab. If the Digital Signature does not verify, then you have a corrupt
download.

I have the same problem, and it definitely is a problem
with the download.
The download seems to work fine, I can see it go up to
6700 KB, but the actual downloaded file is smaller about
4000 KB. If I try it again, after delting temporary
internet files etc. the same thing happens, only with a
slightly different file size.

This seems to be a downloading problem and not a
antispyware problem, but because of this I cannot install
MS antispyware.
I could not find a solution in de MS KnowledgeBase.
Anybody can help me ?

Give it some time, or, perhaps, try via a different ISP if possible. Try
from a different location where you can write the downloaded file to a CD or
USB key.

I'm having the same issue. However, it doesn't just
happen with microsoft antispyware- it's also happening
when I try to download iTunes. Both say the same error,
and both have unvalidated signatures. I was thinking it
was an issue because my computer is brand-new.

Well, kind of. I downloaded firefox, and when downloading
MS Antispyhware within it, I had no problems.

Google?

I was the author of the second re: cannot install message
and I found the solution to my problem, and maybe yours.

It turned out that the size I set for the temporary
internet files was very small ( 3 MB). I made it into 15
MB and now the download problem has disappeared.
I could download and install MS antispyware coreectly.
Thanks for yor conributions.

Thanks for posting this. Others here have strong opinions that TIF is set
too large on many machines. It's good to have a concrete example of what
can happen when it is set too small.
