Cannot install USB 2.0 external HD

Greg

I have tried to install an external USB 2.0 hard drive on
a laptop running Windows XP and it failed... Each time I
plug the device I'll be told :

"HI-SPEED DEVICE plugged into NON HI-SPEED DEVICE"

And if I try to update the driver, it ends up telling
me "Cannot start device" and setup fails.

However, when I tried the device on a Windows 98 desktop,
I had no problem, I didn't even have anything to install,
it worked straight away. Please help, I'm getting crazy!!!

You are plugging a USB 2 device into a USB 1 host, that is why you are
getting this message.
It does not mean that it has 'failed', it will probably work, just at a
slower speed.
Open up My Computer and plug in the drive, you should get the warning, then
the drive should appear on screen.
You do not need to install anything...

Dont know. Ask google or post a new post.

Just to follow up on this question, I am getting the same message in a
pop-up balloon on the task bar not once but twice each time I plug my USB
2.0 thumb drive into my apparently USB 1.1 port. The drive works fine but I
am guessing that it does not operate at the speeds associated with USB 2.0.
That's all right. It does work. My issue is I would like those two
balloons to stop popping up each time I plug this device in. Is there any
way to get rid of this one set of messages without disabling all the pop-up
balloons (some of which are useful and informative)?

Thanks for any help.

Your best solution would be to simply buy and install a USB 2.0 controller
card. These are very cheap and you would then be able to use your USB 2
devices to their full potential.

Thank you for the information. I assume you are talking about a new PCI
card of some kind? Is there any way to upgrade the usb controller on an
existing motherboard so it will act as a 2.0 controller? In any case I
haven't really seen 2.0 upgrades for a laptop and one of the computers that
I am having the problem with is a laptop. Am I right in assuming that
there is normally no way to upgrade an existing USB port so it will be a 2.0
port? Also back to my original question....can I get rid of those annoying
balloons that Windows XP pops up telling me that there's a problem every
time I plug my jump drive in? I really don't mind the slower speed.

There are PCMCIA USB2.0 cards available for notebooks.
Generally, they are around $45-60.

I can't test the following, since I cannot recreate the pop up message you
are seeing, but it is worth a try.

Open Control Panel/System/Hardware tab/Device Manager button. Scroll to the
bottom of the hardware list, right click the "USB Controller" entry and
select Properties. Click the Advanced tab. At the bottom of that tab there
is an option to "Don't show USB errors" select this option and OK your way
out.

This option may not appear on your system since there are many different
brands of these devices.
