Cannot install on a new system

Hello,

Ive recently upgraded a large portion of my PC and now need to do a clean
install on a fresh hard drive.

I have a Win XP Home SP1 CD which I have used many times before to install
from scratch, verified by an old NT4 CD of mine. Now, whenever I try and
install it get a STOP 0x07E error after the drivers have installed on initial
startup from the CD. It wont actually start the windows installation. I
have heard this is a hardware compatability problem with SP1, but dont know
where to go from here.

I did install, temporarily with a friends SP2 CD which worked fine (to
test), but cannot activate it with my key, so I now dont use the machine.

Is there anyway that I can get around this problem?

Any help greatly appreciated. The PC im trying to install on is as follows :

P4 3Ghz
2Gb DDR2 dual channel RAM
120Gb Maxtor SATA hard drive
Soundblaster Live 24bit sound + onboard sound
GeForce 7600 PCI Graphics
Elite Systems ECS PF5 Extreme Motherboard

Thankyou.

I'm not sure about sp1, as to whether it installs to sata correctly, tried
the F6 option early in the install proccess to load the sata/raid drivers
from *floppy*. - you probably have the drivers on your mobo cd, or should be
avilable on mobo site.
Another point, is your Maxtor sata2? if so and your mobo is sata1 there
should be a jumper on the maxtor to force sata1 try that.
