Cannot install HP Color Laserjet 2500L printer on Vista

Can anyone please help? I have a new PC running Vista Ultimate. I installed
my color clj2500 printer, letting Vista take control, but it only prints
black-and-white. I then tried letting Vista install the drivers from the
manufacturer's CD using the 'have disk' command and got an error message
"printer driver not installed". Then I tried to install the drivers from CD
- same problem. Then I tried downloading drivers from the HP website - it
didn't work. Any solutions? Thank you, Steve.

You don't say if you are running 32 or 64 bit, but assuming 32 bit, are you
sure you downloaded the correct drivers from here?

Did you try the PCL 5 and PCL 6 versions?

If you are running 64 bit, look here.

Sorry if this info is redundant, but your symptoms sound like you might have
downloaded the wrong driver.

If they continue to fail, ask HP tech support how to load their drivers.

HP, for some reason, has not released any reliable drivers for Vista yet. I
can't get my HP Photosmart 7150 to print at all, much less in black or white,
so you're ahead of my game. I did speak to HP customer support who claims
that new drivers will be released next week.

Thanks for your reply. I am running 32 bit Vista. I downloaded the HP PCL5
Driver updpcl5winvista2kxp2003.exe 16.5 MB and the Postcript Driver
updpswinvista2kxp2003.exe 16.1 MB but neither worked. I did not try the PCL6
Driver - should I try it? Did I try the correct drivers?

Just a thought that worked for me from another post....

"Uninstall the driver, then try this trick,

This XP install may work, no guarantee of this.

Here is how to install software or drivers on Vista that are for XP

Dell Drivers must be extracted first, download the Rxxxx.exe files you need from Dell and
use winzip to
extract the files to a folder, then use the following method to install them.
Right click on this setup.exe file and select the compatibility Tab
Tick the "run this file in compatibility mode" box and then select XP in the drop down
box, hit OK
Now double click this setup.exe file to execute the install process, hopefully all will go
well and install the
drivers you need.

I do not guarantee all drivers or software to work but a large percentage do.."

This method will work for other software such as printers using this method, but you may
have to Skip the
Extract part, if the exe does not require it, you will know because there will be no
extract available in winzip for it.

Good Luck!

Thanks for your reply. Strangely, Vista picked up my printer as HP Color
Laserjet 2500 PCL5. When I did a test print from my old PC (XP), which wsa
fine, it said PCL6. What is the difference? Does that mean I need the PCL6
drivers, even though Vista said PCL5? I didn't try PCL6, only PCL5 and
postscript drivers.

Sorry, but I'm out of my depth when it comes to PCL. I'd ask HP tech support
if I were you, or (hopefully) somebody else here will jump in...

Have a look at this page for your printer which talks about PCL5 and
PCL6:

http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Document.jsp?
lang=en&cc=us&prodSeriesId=81954&prodTypeId=18972&objectID=c00751649

It seems to say that PCL 6 is more fully featured so if PCL5 is not
giving you what you need try that.

Also have you checked out all the settings on all the TABS of the
Printer Properties to make sure that it is not set to print monochrome
or grayscale only?

I don't have a color laser so I can't help specifically. I'm lucky that
my LJ 2200d is working fine with the driver in VISTA. It says it is
PCL 5.
