cannot install because it's looking in the wrong place

Downloaded the RTM iso, and burned the DVD. Tryung to install on VPC.
After entering the Key, it brings up a window saying that it cannot find
D:\sources\install.wim. When I open the DVD on my host computer, I can see
this file, clear as day.

Any ideas?

If he had burned it as a data DVD it never would have gotten
to the point where it asked for a key. When you burn the
..iso as data, the DVD doesn't do anything because you only
have a single .iso file showing on the DVD.

It's been a while since I used VPC, so this is a shot in the dark. I seem to
recall that you need to install the OS from within VPC, and it sounds like
you're trying to install from outside VPC?
I apologize in advance if my memory is inaccurate.

No, I'm doing it the same way I have done it many times with other OS's.

I'm beginning to suspect that the download it corrupt. I had to start and
stop and resume three different times.

I thought of that but since the OP said he can open the DVD on his computer
and can see the missing file it certainly sounded like it was a data DVD and
had tried to run Setup.exe.

I'm confused by this statement. If I had one big ISO file on the DVD, I
wouldn't have been able to see the particular file that was referenced
earlier.

Did you check your MD5 or SHA against the values posted on the download
page?
Here's a link to a handy utility if you don't already have one.

I had this exact same problem. I got around it by mounting the ISO image
using PowerISO, and installing from that. From what I recall from the
microsoft.public.virtualpc newsgroups, this is a semi-common problem, and
not exclusive to Vista (i.e. XP can have the same issue). I did the same
thing as you, re-download, re-burn, rinse, and repeat... First try with the
mounted image worked fine.

GIve it a whirl, and see how it goes.

Hello.

I had a great deal of problems using the DVD. I simply solved this by coping
the DVD to a folder on a drive and installed it from within Xp. the install
went very well then. (I only installed it about 10 times using the DVD before
I gave up on it, and the checksum was good)

good luck
