"Cannot find server or DNS Error" only on MS sites!!!

Paul

Have hopefully removed the remains of any spyware on my PC
using Ad-Aware (it removed 84 objects). But still getting
a problem with IE6 giving the message "Action Cancelled"
or"Cannot find server or DNS Error". It only does this
when I am trying to access my hotmail messages or trying
to "Review and install Updates" in Windows Update!! I am
able to access other sucere sites such as my bank account
& I can shop online. Have checked the security setting in
Internet options & the sites haven't been added to the
restricted sites list.

I've been tring to sort this problem for 4 days now & it's
doing my head in

Any ideas

Some parasites create this file, check it out.

It may be a HOSTS file problem.
Look also for a file named HOSTS (no extension, could be hidden) rename it
OLDHOSTS.

Henri,

Would you add more info on this. I have several host
files and some created yesterday when my "detecting proxy"
delay problems began. I am wondering if this will solve my
problem as well. Should there be no host files?

Renaming them allows me to put them back if they are
needed? As opposed to deleting them.

I have 3 hosts with no extension. 1 in c:unzipped/hosts,
1 in c:windows and 1 in c:windows/help.

I also have a hosts folder with a hosts file in it. I
have a hosts.zip and a hosts.sam and lmhosts.sam.

Should I rename them all?
