Cannot find 'picture.jpg' error when opening attachment

mikeS

Just started getting this error message. Windows' cannot find '.jpg'. Make
sure you typed the name correctly and try again." This occurs when trying
to click to open the attached jpg file in Windows Live Photo Gallery. The
jpg opens withing the email. I have gone to maintenance to "change store
folder" to reset to ....Microsoft\Windows Mail. May work once then no
longer.

Changes to system. IE 8 was installed yesterday and Windows Live Photo
Galery. Windows live photo gallery is default jpg viewer and will view in
all other situations without problem.

I'm stumped. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

Welcome to Club! <bg>

You get bitten by the IE8-WinMail bug which affects many system (though
not all) after installing IE8.

There is no fix so far - except uninstalling IE8 (
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/957700 ).

The problems can be reduced to JPG and TXT files (all other files types
opening fine) with a workaround:
Right-click on the shortcut that you use to open Windows Mail.
Select Properties.
In the field labeled 'Start in' change the entered value to
%UserProfile%.
Click OK.
Restart Windows Mail and try opening attachments.

Thank you for the tip. I check the shortcut properties and found that the
Start In value already shows to be %UserProfile%
Was I to change that value to the actual name of the user profile? Such as
%myname% ? I've read the KB article on uninstallation and will do that if
I can't get this fixed. Oddly enough my little netbook is running WinXp
with IE8 and Win Live Photo Gallery and does just fine.

Thanks again. mikeS

No, you have the correct 'Start in' value.
Your only workaround at this time is to uninstall IE8.
The problem only exists between Windows Mail (Vista) and
IE8, and only a limited percentage of those users experience it.

No. You have the correct path.

Which types of attachments are causing troubles on your side?
Could you pls list them and quote the respective error-messages?
I've read the KB article on uninstallation and
will do that if I can't get this fixed.

This would really be the last resort.
Everything except TXT and JPG should open fine.
And for the latter IMO the workaround of saving the files first and then
opening is a viable workaround.

Not "odd" at all.
The bug only affects WinMail, so everything is just fine under XP.

If any further questions, pls ask.

Rainald
P.S. Might you pls disable your Anti-Virus signature for postings in the
newsgroups?
TIA.

So far only .jpg attachments have been received and consequently the only
problems I've had.

The error message text reads: "Windows cannot find 'picturename.jpg'. Make
sure you typed the name correctly and try again."

I'll have to do a little more reading as to how to disable the anti virus
signature. I can see that it shouldn't be there.

Thanks again.

This is the normal behaviour of the IE8-WinMail bug.

You'll have to either live with it and work around by saving JPG and TXT
attachments first and then opening them (other types of attachments will
OK). Or you'll have to uninstall IE8.
We do not know any other way.

OK, fine.

That fix "%UserProfile%" worked for me. Even though that was already
there I copied over it. Now IE8 opens the attached JPG.

Is it persistent?
Or did the problem with JPGs return?
And how about TXT attachments?

Great!
Let's hope and pray that it will stay like that ;-)
Thanks for your help.

De nada. You're welcome!

Thanks for the feedback.

Good luck
