Cannot delete directories

M

Matt Russell

Hi all,

I've noticed that in one of my folders there are a lot of
folders with no name. Also, there are a couple of folders
titled com1, com2, lpt1, etc. etc.

I think these folders were created sometime before a
security fix from Microsoft was released (a virus got to
the area via IIS).

Unfortunately, I cannot view and/or delete the contents of
these directories.

Any idea on removal techniques? They're taking up quite a
bit of hard drive space.

Thanks,

Matt

That wasn't a virus, your system has been compromised, someone has been
accessing your system from the outside.

The only secure thing to do is to reformat the partition. In many cases
this method is the only way to remove folders with a space as a name as
well. Sometimes it works to access the machine from a Unix system through
ftp - if this is how the folder got there - and delete the folder from
there.

Folders with reserved names, com1 etc., can often be removed with the
method described in this MS Knowledge Base article:

http://support.microsoft.com/?id=120716

Best regards

Bjorn
