cannot copy file when installing XP sp2 to new disk

After a long sad story of dead disks and machines, I have a brand new
motherboard and processor - AMD Athlon 64 on Gigabyte GA-K8NSC-939 (aka K8
Triton).

When I go to install XP Pro, I get "Setup cannot copy the file: " for many
files - always the sames ones. The first is kodak_dc.icm, then many others.
I know the CD is good - I've copied the entire CD to another machine's hard
disk with no errors. The CDROM drive is also brand new.

Microsoft's upgrade article suggests copying all the files to the hard disk,
but since I'm installing to a new disk, I can't.

Any ideas? One method might be to boot to DOS and copy the files to the
hard disk, but when I use a DOS boot disk made on another XP Pro system,
neither the hard disk (there are 2 - 1 ide, 1 SATA, neither found), nor the
cdrom drive is recognized.

Problem solved - thanks to Novell Linux support!

They suggested running the memory test that comes with suse linux 10 (I'm
also going to install linux), and it hits LOTS of errors. Removed the new
memory, put in old (smaller, slower) memory and now I get a clean copy. BAD
MEMORY. Looks like a return trip to Fry's today.

Finally a fix!

Replacing the memory was the fix for me as well (after trying different CDROM drives, different CD's, versions, etc).

Thanks for the post!
