XP installation from OEM disk - can't copy files

I had to reinstall XP Pro from a brand new OEM installation disk - about 3
days after I bought the system. During the inital installation (in text
mode), the installer reports that it is not able to copy a number of files
to the hard drive (eg. cyzcoins.chm etc). This occurs after the formatting
part of the procedure. On the assumption that there was a drive error, I
tried duplicating the disk and burning it to a blank disk. It burnt OK, but
the same error occurred with the copy.

I suppose I should put this down to a dodgy installation disk, but my son
has had the same experience with XP Pro with an upgrade disk. Furthermore,
I find that CD-ROMs usually don't fail at this rate usually.

Am I doing something wrong, do MS put their installation disks on poor
quality media, or is this just an isolated piece of bad luck?

It could be a bad disk or a bad drive. In some cases it can be related to
memory problems or motherboard controller problems.

When using an OEM disk, one must either do a _repair install_,
or wipe the drive in order to start clean. An OEM disk will not
_upgrade_.
