Cannot control and mute the volume on Windows 2000

I cannot turn up, down, and mute the sound level on my
computer. I went to Start->Programs->Accessories-
Entertainment->Volume Control, and it gave me the
following message.
"There are no active devices available. You may install
mixer devices from Add/Remove Hardware Wizard in the
Control Panel" I don't know what hardware got to do with
this..

I spent hours trying to look for a driver on MSDN web site
to fix this problem, and found no luck. Any idea how to
troubleshoot this thing? Thank you very much for your
advice. Have a great day.
