Cannot connect to XP Pro via remote desktop

I'm a little stumped here. I cannot connect to any of my desktop machines via
remote desktop connection no matter what I have tried.

I first thought it was a bad GPO, but I took a few machines and put them in
the stock "Computers" OU, did a gpupdate /force on the server and the
workstation with the same results. I even went as far as doing a "telnet
localhost 3389" and it does not respond.

RSOP.msc shows nothing being picked up anywhere. There are no third party
firewalls anywhere on the network. There are no routers or anything in the
middle. But whatever it is going on here is affecting all my machines!

Where else can I look? I have this same thing set up at another location and
it works perfect!

I think you need to post this to the
microsoft.public.windows.server.networking news group or possibly the
microsoft.public.windows.terminal_services news group.

When you check to see if Remote Desktop is enabled [system properties -
remote] on the XP computers what do you see? If it is not enabled can you
manually enable it?? If the Windows Firewall is enabled on the XP computer
there needs to be an exception for Remote Desktop also to be able to connect
to it. If RDP is enabled on a computer netstat -an will show TCP 3389 as
listening or connected. The terminal services service [as shown via
services.msc] also needs to be enabled. Note computers in the default
computer OU will still get Group Policy settings that are being applied to
computers at the domain level.

Your login account must be a member of the local Remote Desktop Users Group.
If you are using an account which is in the local Admins Group, you already
have RDP access privileges without expressly being in the Remote Desktop
Users Group.

In the RSoP.msc report, verify that the Allow logon through Terminal
Services user right includes Administrators, Remote Desktop Users AND that
the Deny logon through Terminal Services user right does not include Groups
which include your logon account. Note that there may be differences between
the RSoP settings and the Local Security Policy.

After you check on the settings Steve mentioned, check for the Allow or Deny
User Rights I listed here. But you already have an excellent troubleshooting
tool available to you by way of the other location where RDP is working -
compare the settings Steve and I mentioned here to what you have on the
working location and the failing one. Keep us posted.
