signed up for DSL service and cannot connect. Also dialup
quit connecting after installing NIC. Running XP
proffessional will all latest patches as of Jan-10.
New ISP is quest DSL with MSN. Old dial up was
att.worldnet.

I did all below with McAfee virusscan and firewall
disabled. All settings match reccommended values.

ipconfig /all returns node UNKNOWN
Situation fits as below:

If your local IP address is returned as 169.254.y.z, with
a subnet mask of 255.255.0.0, the IP address was assigned
by the Automatic Private IP Addressing (APIPA) feature of
Windows XP Professional. This means that TCP/IP is
configured for automatic configuration, that no DHCP
server was found, and no alternate configuration is
specified. This configuration has no default gateway for
the interface.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Netbt\

Change the value of the EnableProxy value in the preceding
registry key to 0 or 1, quit Registry Editor, and then
restart your computer.

HOWEVER!!!: using REGEDIT, there is no enableproxy line
item as above!?

Now what? I do know what to try. Can I add the
line "enableproxy" line item with REGEDIT or should I
reload WINXP from scratch?

sometimes disabling firewall(macafee) is not enough, uninstall to test
....also your xp internal firewall may have been activated when you installed
the NIC

I did uninstall McAfee to disable. Also have verified the
the XP firewall is not turned on.

Hi spj

What sort of DSL hardware are you using (router/modem), please describe
further. How do you log on to ISP? or is that not necessary?
Don't play with KB 310570 for now. My IP config says node type unknown too
and our system works perfectly.
