cannot close XP services page after opening

I have XP SP3 and all updates. I want to delete Windows.edb as the file is
extremely fragmented as reported by Windows defragmenter and I cannot
defragment even in safe mode . To delete this I need to disable Windows
Search service.

On opening Windows Management Services I se a blank page and get a message
saying:

Internet Explorer Script Error An error has occurred on the script on this
page. There is no further textg against the parameters shown, e.g.
Line/char/error

It just says "do you wish to continue using scripts on this page? YES /NO"

Clicking either button has no effect and I cannot then close the error
message window or the services window. I do not know which process to stop
using Task manager and have to restart Windows by power off.

I have Googled for script error and see many references to IE7 but I do not
understand why opening the services window has anything to do with IE7?

Despite this I have tried reregistering the scripting files and also
reinstalling Script 5.6 but this has not solved my problem.

I see nothing via Google that describes my problem and I hope that someone
here has seen it before. As a last resort is there any way way of
stopping a service other than opening the services window, for example via
the registry?

Follow the steps here to find out what the exact script error is and for:
http://www.pcreview.co.uk/forums/thread-1971536.php

As for stopping a service you can either go to Start/Run/Regedit - Local
Machine - System - CurrentControlSet -Services or Start/Run/CMD - sc delete
<service name>. Reboot.

To Add a Service

Go to Start/Run/CMD and type in: sc create <service name>. Reboot.

sc create termservice
